VE Sessions

 Volunteer Exam (VE) Sessions

On the second Monday of every month, volunteer exams sponsored by Splitrock ARA, are given at the Mount Arlington Civic Center, located at the corner of Fern Place and South Glen Ave. (Log Cabin) in Mt. Arlington, NJ.

If you need travel directions, talk-in is on the WS2R 2-meter Repeater. Registration for the exams begins at 7PM.
The VE test fee for 2023 is $15.00. This is the authorized fee established by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The fee goes to the Volunteer Examiner Coordinator (VEC) to help recover expenses related to this volunteer-based program.
Please bring either a check or money order (made out to: ARRL VEC) or exact change as the VE Team may not be able to make change.
Some electronic calculators (including programmable are allowed). Be prepared to demonstrate to the administering VE Team that all calculator memories have been cleared and that it has no built-in formulas. They may otherwise have to deny you the use of your calculator. Scratch paper will be provided.
If you do not currently have an Amateur License, bring a photo ID. If you do have an Amateur License and wish to take an upgrade test, in addition to the photo ID, bring your original amateur license. If you have an active Certificate of Successful Completion of Examination (CSCE), bring it along with a photocopy.
For further information, you can contact the VE Team Leader, Sid (K2GG) via the Splitrock Repeater, or e-mail him at ve#splitrockara.org.
The only way to get a hard (paper) copy of your Ham Radio license from the FCC, after February 17, 2015, is to register for an FRN before you go to any VE session to take the exam. https://apps.fcc.gov/coresWeb/publicHome.do
And then next, also log into the FCC’s ULS webpage to change your “paper preference”; again, before you take any exam.

This last step is also suggested the first time you periodically (every 10 years) renew your license, if you want a paper copy of the ticket.

What is a Volunteer Examiner?

Volunteer Examiners (VEs) are Amateur Extra Class, Advanced Class and General Class radio operators who volunteer their time and talent to prepare and administer amateur radio operator license examinations. The examination for a Technician Class operator License grant is also prepared and administered by Advanced and General Class operators. Advanced Class Licensees may also prepare and administer General Class License examinations. A Volunteer Examiner is a person at least 18 years of age whose License has never been revoked or suspended. Your close relatives, however, cannot be your Volunteer Examiner. Each Volunteer Examiner, moreover, has been accredited by a Volunteer-Examiner Coordinator (VEC), an organization that exists for the purpose of furthering the amateur service.
